Exploratory Syllabus

Exploratory 8th grade in the fall semester will mostly center on National History Day Project. This project allows students to work as individuals or in groups of 2-5 students. This project is designed to teach students to use primary and secondary sources to develop their topics within the NHD theme. This year’s theme is Triumph and Tragedy. The topic may cover an individual, group, or movement. Their project will be judged on the local level and could possibly advance to regional, state and national levels. The following dates are important for the project:

December 11, 2018 – Project due at school to be grades

February 22, 2019 – Regionals at MTSU

April 13, 2019 – State Competition at the State Capitol Complex

June 9-13, 2019 – Nationals in Maryland

Students will also work on skills for reading primary sources and secondary sources using the sources to write essays. We will also work on note taking skills, map skills and some vocabulary related to history comprehension. We will use programs such as Medal of Honor and history related videos to work on some of these skills.

In the spring semester students will work on research papers. Most paper topics are related to mysteries in history, but over the years other topics of interest have been added. Students will also be doing a unit over a novel in the spring and will complete a project over the book.

First Semester, students will need to have a composition book. They will also need supplies to complete their projects. Groups should divide responsibilities between their members.

Second Semester, students will need 3x5 lined note cards for the research paper. I will provide envelopes to them to keep their information together. They will also need supplies for their book project.
