Exploratory Syllabus

Need 3x5 or 4x6 notecards

Exploratory for 6th and 8th grade in the fall semester will mostly center on National History Day Project. This project allows students to work as individuals or in groups of 2-5 students. This project is designed to teach students to use primary and secondary sources to develop their topics within the NHD theme. This year’s theme is Conflict and Compromise. The topic may cover an individual, group, or movement. Their project will be judged on the local level and could possibly advance to regional, state and national. The following dates are important for the project:

Dec 12, 2017 – Project due at school to be grades

January 9, 2018 – Local judging at SMS

February 23, 2018 – Regionals at MTSU

April 7, 2018 – State Competition at the State Capitol Complex

June 10-14, 2018 – Nationals in Maryland

Students will also work on skills for reading primary sources and secondary sources using the sources to write essays. In the spring semester students will work on research papers. Students will also be doing a unit over a novel in the spring and will complete a project over the book. Throughout the year we will also use material from the Medal of Honor program which looks at some of our highest national heroes and what courage, patriotism and integrity mean. We will also work on other skills as needed.
