Welcome to my page!  I hope you find much of the information you need here.  Feel free to email me or call the school with any questions or comments!


Valentine's Fundraiser  

We are having a fundraiser from January 17 through January 29 to raise money for our Music In The Parks trip to Pigeon Forge in May. Fliers and information will be sent home on Thursday January 17. 100% of the profits from this fundraiser will go into the student's individual account to be used to pay for trips. Students not going on the trip this year may accrue their monies to be used for future trips. This helps with what parents will have to pay out of pocket for our students to be able to compete with other schools and be rewarded for such a great year!


Tri-Lakes Clinic Band  

Several students will be attending the Tri-Lakes Clinic Band January 25-26 at Harris Middle School in Shelbyville. The students attending have brought home information and a permission form to be signed. 

Friday 3:00 students will leave SMS by bus, returning to SMS at approximately 10:30

Saturday we will meet at 7:30 at FCHS. The concert will be at 5:00 in Shelbyville and parents are encouraged to attend. Students riding the bus home will return to FCHS at approximately 8:00.


Music In The Parks Trip  

We are planning on performing and competing in the Music In The Parks Festival in Pigeon Forge, TN May 3-4. All eighth grade students and select seventh grade students will perform and compete against other schools from the southeast region. We will leave Friday afternoon and perform that evening. We will spend the night at the Hampton Inn in Sevierville. Saturday the students will spend the entire day at Dollywood and return home late Saturday night. Parents are encouraged to go with us and support our students! We have reserved a block of rooms, please let me know if you want to pay for one for your family to join us. Rooms are limited, first come first served. I will know exactly how many rooms are available once we know how many students will be going.

The cost per student is approximately $160 which includes transportation, hotel, festival fees and park ticket. Pizza will be provided Friday night, the hotel has a breakfast free of charge, and the students will get a meal ticket to use at Dollywood. They will need money to purchase fast food on the way up Friday and on the way home Saturday. Our Valentine Fundaiser will be used to offset the student expense. Chaperones will need to pay a partial fee to go, not the full $160. That amount will be determined once we know how many are going.

A $25 deposit will be required for each student going on February 1, checks payable to SMS.

 


Tri-Lakes Concert Festival  

Saturday, March 2, the SMS Wind Ensemble will perform at Lincoln Co. High School in the Tri-Lakes Band Director's Association Concert Festival. We will leave SMS at 8:30 am and return at approximately 3 pm. Our performance time is 11:15. Parents are welcome to watch the performance and support our students! Dress for students will be concert black (like we did for the Christmas concert). Attendance is mandatory for those students in the Wind Ensemble.


Spring Concert  

Our Spring Concert will be Tuesday, April 9 at 6:30. More details will be available later. Please go ahead and put this on your calendar. It is mandatory that each student attend.


"BAND" app  

Please download the free "band" app onto your smart phone. Join the group "SMS Band Boosters". We will be using this app for parent communications this year. Announcements will appear as a text on your phone, keeping everyone in the loop without having to check an email or website. The calender of events is on the app so you will always know about important dates.


The Music Stop   

The Music Stop in Murfreesboro comes to SMS weekly to make deliveries and pick up repairs. You may call them at 615-217-6165 to place an order for supplies, pay over the phone, and they will deliver your order their next trip.


6th Grade  

All sixth grade students need an Essential Elements Book 1 for thier instrument and an instrument care kit (percussion do not need the care kit).

We need to be sure students have an instrument to play by the end of August. You may rent from the Music Stop online http://www.themusicstoponline.com/ online or go to their store in Murfreesboro or be at SMS on August 28. You may also rent from Mid-State Piano Gallery and Music in Tullahoma. You may purchase anywhere of your choice. If you find an instrument online you would like for me to look at, send me a link and I will give my opinion.

Clarinet and saxophone students need to be sure to have a supply of reeds to use.


7/8th Grade Supplies  

Supplies may be purchased anywhere that caters to band or online. Good websites are music123.com and wwbw.com. Orders can be made over the phone to The Music Stop (615-217-6165) and they will deliver the items to South free of charge.

7 and 8th graders need to be sure to have a lyre and flip folder by the first football game on August 29. These items cost $15-20 depending on the instrument. 

If a student has lost or damaged their Essential Elements Book 1 they will need to replace it as we will be using it this year.

Clarinet and Saxophone students need to be sure to have a good supply of reeds.

All students other than percussion need to have complete care kits. Items can be bought separately as needed.

Percussion need to have marching sticks if they are playing snare. I prefer the Ralph Hardimon ones. All percussionists need concert sticks, bell mallets and yarn mallets.


Private Lessons  

Private lessons are important for the student who is serious about their playing and would like to participate in honor bands. They will be available this year for interested students. Please email Mrs. Hammer for more information. Lessons are approximately $20/half hour.
